Section 3/7: Is the Bible Reliable?

No Motivation to Start A Movement

People are capable of spinning the truth or exaggerating to achieve a goal. Think of politicians, activists, journalists, etc. In these instances there is a payoff in sight: get elected, change the world or sell books.

However, there was nothing to gain from making up a new religion in Israel – which is effectively what the writers of the New Testament were doing – despite this not being their original intention. Followers of Jesus lost their homes, their friends, and prestige. Many were even put to death.

There was no motivation to fabricate a story to gain these “rewards.”

This is even more staggering considering the Jewish background of most early Christians.
