Albert Einstein was one of the scientists who had believed the universe to be eternal and unchanging. However, his mathematics of General Relativity, coupled with the observational evidence of Hubble’s telescope, confirmed to him and scientists worldwide that the universe was growing larger.
It wasn’t long before scientists realized the implications of an expanding universe. It meant that if we were to see the universe in reverse, we would see it getting smaller and smaller, until its beginning as a single point. This origin of the universe is now known as the “Big Bang.”
Contrary to what people believed for thousands of years, scientists now know that the universe literally leapt into existence in a single moment of time.
