Section 6/7: The Problem of Suffering

Why Does Adam and Eve’s Sin Affect Us?

When Adam and Eve sinned, it affected more than just themselves. Because they were the first man and woman, they were the forebears of the rest of the human race. Their sin infected all the people who came after them, kind of like a genetic disorder. This shouldn’t be surprising, considering that we all inherit many traits from our ancestors. Spiritual heredity is just as real as physical heredity. When Adam and Eve used their free will to rebel against God (as any of us may well have done in the same situation), the consequences were far-reaching.
