Section 6/7: The Problem of Suffering

The Connection between Suffering and Goodness

In a profound way, suffering is inseparable from goodness in this world. As Peter Kreeft writes, “Love somehow goes with suffering. Freedom goes with suffering. Truth, wisdom, knowledge of reality, go with suffering. It seems that everything that has intrinsic value, everything that cannot be bought or negotiated or compromised or relativized or reduced, goes with suffering.”
The ultimate example is the cross. The greatest suffering was the greatest act of love and mercy and resulted in the greatest healing, hope, and joy. Christ’s suffering wasn’t in vain; it was powerful and meaningful. When we follow Him, our suffering isn’t in vain either.
