Christianity answers the problem of suffering in a way that no other religion does. Only Christianity claims that God became like us and stepped into our suffering in order to overcome it. Louis Markos compares Jesus to the deistic God, who is “removed and aloof from the struggles of men,” and the gods of Greece and Rome, who are portrayed “feasting on nectar and ambrosia while arbitrarily raining down benevolence or destruction on us puny, insignificant mortals below.” Christ alone among all other gods became what we are, in an incredible act of mercy and humility, and took our pain upon Himself in order to rescue us.
Jesus’ Suffering Sets Christianity Apart
I agree
I still don’t think I can trust Jesus when I actually experience suffering in my life.
I disagree
Wait a minute. Can’t we get rid of the problem of suffering if we say that God doesn’t exist at all? Doesn’t atheism do a better job of explaining suffering than Christianity does?
I agree that Christianity offers a unique solution to suffering. I want to move on.
