When it comes to important things in life, we hate mysteries. But according to philosopher Peter Kreeft, our demand to solve the mystery of suffering is partly due to a modern prejudice against mystery. If we can’t solve the mystery, we think, then no solution exists.
But according to Christianity, mystery is positive. We may be in the dark, but reality is light. There are answers even if we currently can’t see them.
We can be satisfied with partial answers to the problem of suffering if we reject modernity’s demand for complete knowledge and recover a positive view of mystery.
