Jesus’ suffering culminated in the cross. He was betrayed, humiliated, rejected, and mocked. And as He hung on the cross cross, Jesus experienced “cosmic rejection and pain that exceeds ours as infinitely as his knowledge and power exceeds ours” when He was cut off from the eternal love of His Father. Louis Markos says that when this happened, Jesus experienced in full the existential despair that we feel in our modern world. Jesus knows the feeling of being alone in a universe without meaning, purpose, or hope. From our physical pain to the shame we feel in relationships to our sense of meaninglessness and despair, Jesus understands it all.
