Section 6/7: The Problem of Suffering

What About Atheism?

If God doesn’t exist, if the universe consists of nothing but blind matter, and if life is only sustained through a violent and chaotic process of natural selection, we should expect the world to be full of suffering and death. But if this is the case, we shouldn’t be bothered it either. And yet we are. Atheism isn’t a viable theory because it can’t account for the fact that we are surprised and offended by suffering.
