Section 5/7: What’s Wrong with Christianity

Women and Historical Christianity

Bible Christianity History Jesus

There’s no doubt that at different times in history, people have used the Bible to justify bigoted views, including those that oppressed women. There are certain passages in

particularly in the Old Testament, that can be both confusing and concerning to a contemporary western reader regarding women (among other topics).

Jesus, however, highly valued women individually and collectively. He spoke with women, healed and helped them, and treated them with a level of respect that was completely counter-cultural in the Ancient Near East. It’s also noteworthy that the first witnesses to Jesus' resurrection were women. For these events to be accurately recorded and preserved is a testament to God’s (and Christianity’s) extraordinarily high view of women. In a time when women were commonly considered property and lacked credibility, Jesus saw the God-given worth of women and gave them a voice.
